Besides Windows, you can install various operating systems on your computers, which may be less popular but are better suited for specific purposes. One of them is Linux, on which SteamOS is based, directly stemming from the Steam application for purchasing games on Windows.

Announced on Reddit, the latest stable version (41.20250121) of Bazzite now runs on the Legion Go S, offering an enhanced user experience with its handheld daemon menu and a convenient option to “Reboot into Windows.”

Bazzite Adds Support for Lenovo Legion Go S: A Steady Alternative to SteamOS 1

While SteamOS is a common choice for handhelds, Bazzite creator Kyle Gospodnetich explains that Bazzite overcomes several SteamOS limitations, such as immutability and missing features like drive encryption and secure boot. It also simplifies non-Steam gaming, offering extra tools and packages to make setup faster.

With dual-booting capabilities, Bazzite now allows users to reboot directly into Windows, bypassing the usual BIOS process. Plus, Windows can be added to your Steam library as a non-Steam game, making it just as easy to launch as any other title. Bazzite positions itself as a power-user-friendly alternative to both SteamOS and Windows 11.

SteamOS is an open-source operating system based on Linux, initially developed by Valve for gaming. It is designed to optimize gaming performance on television screens and is free for both users and developers. SteamOS enhances graphic processing, reduces input lag, and supports streaming games from Windows and OS X to SteamOS devices. It also features Family Sharing, Steam Cloud for saving game data, and access to Steam Workshop for game modding. First announced in 2013, SteamOS aims to offer a shared, entertainment-focused, multi-user platform for gaming enthusiasts.

Lenovo unveiled its first SteamOS-powered handheld console, the Legion Go S, at CES 2025. Set for release in May 2025 at a price of $499, the console features the new AMD Ryzen Z2 Go chip, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB storage drive. Weighing 730g, it's slightly heavier than the Steam Deck (640g) and has a 55Wh battery. The 8-inch display offers a 1920×1200p resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate and VRR technology, outpacing the Steam Deck's 1280x800p display. The Legion Go S boasts a monolithic body and two additional rear functional buttons, departing from the Nintendo Switch’s removable controllers. Lenovo also showcased a Windows-powered version with upgraded specs, priced at $729, available soon.
