From Fortnite’s Rise to New Experiments

When Fortnite first launched, it featured only two modes: Save the World and Battle Royale. While Save the World came first, the explosive popularity of battle royale games quickly pushed Epic Games to shift focus — a move that turned Fortnite into one of the most successful games of its generation.

Over time, Epic continued experimenting with new modes to attract fresh audiences and retain longtime players. One such attempt was Fortnite Ballistic, a first-person tactical shooter inspired by games like Counter-Strike.

However, the mode received mixed reactions at launch, and many players abandoned it after only a few sessions.

Ballistic Faces Shutdown

Amid recent layoffs and monetization changes, Epic Games has been restructuring its operations — including plans to shut down several game modes. Ballistic, along with Rocket Racing and Festival Battle Stage, is scheduled for removal in 2026.

Fortnite Ballistic is currently set to go offline on April 16, 2026, with the release of update v40.20.

A Community Effort to Save the Mode

Typical Gamer, who has openly expressed his support for Ballistic, believes the mode didn’t receive the attention or development time it deserved.

In a recent post, he revealed that JOGO, a development company he co-founded with MustardPlays and which operates within Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), would be willing to acquire the mode. The plan would be to maintain, improve, and continue developing Ballistic as an ongoing project.

Will Epic Consider the Offer?

It remains unclear whether Epic Games will entertain such a proposal. While selling a major in-game mode would be highly unusual, JOGO’s experience with UEFN-based projects could make the idea more feasible than a traditional external acquisition.

If discussions do take place, they would likely happen privately, with any outcome announced only after an agreement is reached — if at all.

What Comes Next?

With Ballistic’s shutdown date approaching, Epic Games will need to decide soon whether the mode will be removed as planned, temporarily reworked, or potentially handed over to a new team.

The situation has also sparked broader speculation: if one creator can attempt to save a game mode, could others step in to preserve Rocket Racing or Festival Battle Stage as well?
