Elder Scrolls Blades avslutar tjänsten efter åtta år utan offline-bevarande
Bethesda will permanently shut down The Elder Scrolls: Blades on June 30, closing an eight-year run for the mobile-focused spinoff. The decision surfaced through an in-game banner and a notice on the Nintendo eShop, first highlighted on Reddit by a user who shared the message publicly.
The notice confirms that all in-game purchases will be reduced to a single unit of currency until the shutdown date. Players will also receive a free bundle of gems and sigils, allowing full access to the game’s remaining content during its final months. The message concludes with a brief acknowledgment from the developer, thanking players for their time with the game.
Blades launched as a hybrid project that combined dungeon crawling with town-building mechanics, along with roguelike elements and PvP modes. It targeted mobile platforms and later expanded to the Nintendo Switch, but it never reached PC despite early expectations from parts of the audience. Its design leaned heavily on in-app purchases, which shaped both its progression system and player reception.
At launch in 2019, the game generated revenue quickly, reportedly surpassing $500,000 in a short period. That performance came despite criticism centered on monetization, particularly mechanics tied to time-gating and purchasable chests. These systems allowed players to accelerate progress by spending money, a structure that drew consistent scrutiny from critics and players.
The shutdown marks the second closure of an Elder Scrolls spinoff in just over a year. The digital card game Legends ended service in January 2025 after an extended period without updates. Unlike Blades, Legends has seen attempts from fans to revive or preserve aspects of the game, though no official continuation has emerged.
Blades’ eight-year lifespan stands out for a live-service mobile title, particularly one that did not maintain a strong presence in ongoing updates or major expansions. Bethesda has not provided a detailed explanation for why Blades remained active longer than Legends, but factors such as maintenance costs or internal priorities may have contributed to the timeline.
I think the absence of any offline version shows a lack of long-term preservation planning, especially for a game tied to a major franchise. Once servers go offline, Blades will no longer be accessible in any form, removing all content regardless of player investment or progression.
The shutdown also highlights a broader pattern within the franchise’s side projects. While mainline entries continue to define the series’ identity, spinoffs have faced mixed outcomes in both reception and longevity. Blades introduced a different structure built around short sessions and monetized systems, diverging from the open-ended design associated with the core games.
I see a contrast when comparing Blades to the forgotten Elder Scrolls game, which remains playable decades after release through platforms like Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire on GOG. That older title lacks ongoing support but persists as a complete, accessible product, underscoring a difference in how games are preserved across eras.
With the June deadline set, Bethesda has shifted Blades into a final state focused on unrestricted access rather than continued development. The temporary pricing changes and free resources remove barriers that once defined its progression, effectively turning the remaining months into an open period for exploration before the servers close permanently.
