Wikipedias medgrundare förbjuden att redigera webbplatsen han var med och skapade
Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger has revealed that he has been indefinitely banned from editing the online encyclopedia, sparking fresh debate over the platform's governance and editorial policies.
The suspension follows accusations that Sanger violated Wikipedia's rules by attempting to influence discussions through coordinated participation, a practice commonly referred to as "canvassing."
Larry Sanger Permanently Blocked From Editing Wikipedia
Sanger announced the ban on his X account, saying he had been indefinitely prohibited from making changes to Wikipedia articles.
According to the platform's moderators, the decision was based on claims that Sanger engaged in canvassing and was "not here to constructively build the encyclopedia." The ruling suggests he sought to influence discussions surrounding specific high-profile topics.
The controversy is linked to Sanger's involvement with the Intellectual Diversity WikiProject, an initiative intended to increase representation for viewpoints and subjects he believes receive insufficient attention on Wikipedia.
Following the ban, Sanger criticized the decision, describing the process as lacking due process and accusing those responsible of acting as a "mob."
Longtime Critic of Wikipedia
Although Sanger helped launch Wikipedia in 2001, he has frequently criticized the platform since leaving the project shortly afterward.
Over the years, he has argued that Wikipedia requires stronger governance and clearer editorial standards to maintain neutrality and accuracy. Sanger has also repeatedly claimed that the encyclopedia has developed political bias, alleging that articles increasingly reflect liberal viewpoints.
His latest suspension further highlights the ongoing disagreements between the co-founder and the community that now manages the platform.
Wikipedia Continues to Face Scrutiny
The incident adds to a long list of controversies surrounding Wikipedia's editorial model.
Because anyone can contribute to the encyclopedia, the platform has often faced criticism over article accuracy, political neutrality, vandalism, and the spread of misinformation. Academic institutions have also debated Wikipedia's reliability as a source due to its open-editing structure.
Despite these concerns, Wikipedia remains one of the most influential websites on the internet.
One of the World's Largest Knowledge Platforms
More than two decades after its launch, Wikipedia continues to be one of the web's most visited destinations.
According to the Wikimedia Foundation, the English-language edition alone contains more than seven million articles, while the platform has over 53 million registered users. Around 260,000 editors have actively contributed to Wikipedia over the past month, helping maintain and expand one of the world's largest free knowledge resources.
While Larry Sanger's suspension is unlikely to affect Wikipedia's day-to-day operations, it has once again reignited discussions about editorial transparency, governance, and the balance between community moderation and open collaboration.
