The registration of new trademarks often signals that studios will sooner or later announce games tied to certain franchises. It seems that Electronic Arts is preparing to revive a legendary RPG game series that was at the height of its popularity during the 1980s and 1990s.

This is about the Ultima franchise—open-world fantasy role-playing games created by Origin Systems, with the rights now owned by Electronic Arts. The original game, Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness, was released way back in 1981 and is considered one of the pioneers of the open-world RPG genre. Recently, Reddit users noticed that Electronic Arts registered two new trademarks related to the game, under Class 0411 and Class 0092. Although the studio hasn’t made any official announcements, it's suggested these could be tied to the announcement of new games in the Ultima universe, one of which is expected to be an online project, as you can see below:

EA Has Filed New Trademarks For Ultima

"Electronic Arts has re-filed its “Ultima” trademark, and it looks like more than just a standard renewal.

There are two fresh trademarks for Ultima this week, one filed under “Class 0411” and the other under “Class 0092“. What does this mean? Well, Class 041 protects Ultima as an “online computer game“, while Class 009 encompasses “downloadable video games“."

It is also worth noting that recently one of the creators of Ultima, Richard Garriott, announced his intention to reclaim the rights to the franchise for himself, without having any financial ties to Electronic Arts. According to U.S. law, an author has the right to regain ownership of their products within 35 years. Since Origin Systems was sold to EA in 1992, it’s not surprising that Garriott chose to act now. However, Electronic Arts’ recent trademark registrations could also indicate that the company has no plans to share these rights with anyone else.
