Minecraft Java höjer sina systemkrav för första gången sedan 2009, och RAM är inte det verkliga hindret

Minecraft Java Edition got its first system requirement update since the game's 2009 launch on July 21, and the number that matters most isn't RAM. Mojang is moving Java Edition's renderer from OpenGL to Vulkan, and Vulkan 1.3 support now gates who can launch the game at all, independent of how much memory or CPU power a machine has.

The new minimum calls for 8GB of RAM with a discrete GPU or 12GB with integrated graphics, a four-core processor such as an Intel Core i3-10100 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100, and a Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM, targeting 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast graphics. The recommended tier asks for 16GB of RAM, a chip like the Intel Core i5-12400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600, and a GPU such as an RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 5600 XT with 6GB of VRAM, aimed at 1080p and 60 FPS on Fancy graphics.

Vulkan 1.3 is where the update bites. GPUs from before roughly 2016 tend to lack it, which rules out Intel HD Graphics 4000, the integrated chip that served as Java Edition's de facto minimum for most of the last decade, along with a range of older AMD Radeon parts. Intel-based Macs fall into the same category and lose support outright, since Apple's shift to Apple Silicon left older Intel Mac graphics stacks without a path to Vulkan 1.3. A machine can clear the RAM and CPU bars and still fail to launch the game if its GPU driver stops there.

Mojang framed the change as a maintenance decision rather than a graphics push: bigger worlds and 17 years of added features and technical systems outgrew what the original OpenGL-era minimum could carry, and propping up hardware that can't run the current game well limits what the studio can build next. The company set no hard date for dropping OpenGL support, saying below-spec hardware "may struggle or fail to launch Java Edition in the future."

The engine work is running alongside smaller, shippable updates. Minecraft Preview 26.40.30 fixed a camping problem that dates back to 2012, adding a craftable Straw Bed that lets players sleep through the night on expeditions without resetting their spawn point. Mojang has also kept pushing the game onto new surfaces: an interactive Ender Dragon fight built from YouTube's 360-degree video tools made Minecraft playable directly inside a YouTube video, no download required.

I think the lack of a firm OpenGL sunset date matters more than the spec numbers themselves, since Mojang is choosing to warn players well ahead of forcing anyone off older hardware. Minecraft spent 17 years as the game that ran on almost anything, and I read this update as the moment that reputation starts to narrow, quietly and on Mojang's own schedule rather than all at once. Anyone still running an Intel Mac or a decade-old GPU has time to plan a replacement, but the clock on OpenGL support is now running whether Mojang names the date or not.
