Mafia 2:s ursprungliga slut har avslöjats – och det förändrar allt

The ending of Mafia 2 is considered one of the most unexpected and dramatic not only in the entire franchise's history, but among open-world action games as well. However, as revealed by a recent major leak, one detail could have turned out completely differently—and in the context of the series, it is incredibly significant.

As is well known, a massive data leak known as the Steam Teraleak occurred at the end of last month, involving 12 TB of data from Steam’s servers dating from 2003 to 2013. In addition to revealing details about various Valve projects, including Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, CS: GO, and others, it also affected many games from third-party developers, such as Spec Ops: The Line, Grand Theft Auto 3, Mafia 2, and others. Speaking of the latter, a video has even surfaced online showing the game’s original ending, which is quite different from what we saw in the final version of the game.

The moment Vito Scaletta gets into the car where Leo and Paulie are sitting, we once again see a scene in which another car—with his friend Joe inside—veers off course. We hear the legendary line again: "Sorry, kid. Joe wasn't part of our deal," but a moment later we see Paulie pull out a gun. Although we’ll never know for sure, it seems likely that 2K Czech had planned to kill off Vito in the ending of Mafia 2, since gunshots can be heard in the video, and that would have marked the end of his story in the franchise. However, the developers decided against that option. Later, as we recall, Vito returned as a supporting character in Mafia 3.

Last month, Hangar 13 released a complete anthology of the franchise— Mafia: The Omertà Collection —which includes all previously released DLC, as well as Mafia: The Definitive Edition support for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. On the same day, August 14, Mafia: The Old Country received the Man of Honor story expansion, bringing Ennio Salieri back to the screen. As for Mafia 2, there’s a possibility that the game could receive a full-fledged remake on Unreal Engine 5 sooner rather than later, and it’s also known that Hangar 13 is working on a new installment, which, incidentally, may once again take players back to Empire Bay and will be a direct sequel to The Old Country.
