Sanctuary is facing a major turning point as Blizzard officially closes the narrative arc of Diablo IV following the release of the Lord of Hatred expansion. At BlizzCon 2026, developers surprised fans by announcing Diablo V, slated for a 2029 release. In an interview with PCGamer, game director Brent Gibson stated that the team no longer plans to release story expansions for the current entry, shifting their resources toward seasonal support and the development of the fifth installment.

According to Brent Gibson, the story of Mephisto in Lord of Hatred has reached a logical conclusion, paving the way for new antagonists and a fresh setting.

"We are currently focused on seasons and preparing for the Diablo V. The History of Hatred is complete, we have told it in its entirety. Lord of Hatred puts a period in Mephisto's storyline, and therefore next we are going to tell the story of Terror," noted Brent Gibson in his conversation with PCGamer.

The events of the upcoming Diablo V will take place exactly 100 years after the finale of the fourth game. The creators intend to smoothly guide the community toward this time jump through content patches, though a concrete transition plan is still being formulated.

"The events of Diablo V will take place 100 years after the events of Diablo IV, and this gives us a great opportunity to continue following the plot's development together with our fans while we are on the path to that moment. We have high hopes for a seamless continuation of the series, but we don't yet have a clear picture of how exactly this will be implemented, as we want to observe the fans' reaction to each subsequent season," explained the game director.

Journalists also raised the question of a potential parallel development for Diablo IV and Diablo V, drawing comparisons to how Grinding Gear Games support both versions of Path of Exile. In response, the developer recalled the long-term support given to other company projects, citing Diablo II: Resurrected, for which the studio released major updates and new classes years after release.

"Well, you know, there are many players in Diablo IV, they love our game and its fanbase is huge, so you can expect continued support for our game for a long time," summed up Brent Gibson.

This approach means that despite abandoning large-scale addons like Lord of Hatred, Blizzard has no intention of abandoning their current player base. Transitioning to a purely seasonal model will allow the studio to dedicate their main efforts to Diablo V while maintaining a steady influx of game content into Sanctuary over the coming years.
