Naughty Dog bekräftar att nya The Last of Us-spel är under utveckling

Rumors of Naughty Dog working on a new The Last of Us game have been floating around for a while, but they're no longer just rumors. The studio has now laid out its plans for the franchise's future, confirming two new projects are already in early development.

In a new blog post marking The Last of Us Day, Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann confirmed the studio is working on a couple of projects expanding the canon established by The Last of Us Part I and Part II. You can check out his fuller comments below:

“We have a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages – so we can’t say much about them at this point. I will tell you that both projects will expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part I and Part II.

The world of The Last of Us means a great deal to us, and we wouldn’t return to it unless we had something meaningful to say. We believe these stories are worth telling.”

Given that Naughty Dog's main focus right now is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, its new IP, these upcoming The Last of Us projects likely won't be revealed before 2028 at the earliest and could even be targeting release on the next-gen PlayStation 6. Previous rumors also suggested Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will release somewhere in 2027.

As for what "expanding the canon" might mean, there's already been speculation about a game centered on other immune characters. Meanwhile, Troy Baker, who voices Joel, has also claimed he'd like to see a prequel focused on Joel and his brother Tommy. Either of those could plausibly be the direction these new entries take.

In other Last of Us Day news, Sucker Punch has announced a collaboration with Naughty Dog: a Clicker-themed skin will be available in Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition, launching October 1 exclusively on PlayStation 5.
