Amazon köper Nvidia AI-chips för miljarder, men det är inte orsaken till bristen på RTX 5090

Amazon is buying billions of dollars’ worth of Nvidia AI hardware, but some of those servers aren’t running and are just sitting in warehouses. The reason is that some Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers don’t have enough power to switch them on. Business Insider reported this after reviewing the company’s internal emails.

According to Business Insider, AWS takes delivery of Nvidia GB300 server racks before its data centers are ready for them. Amazon calls this program Early Rack Receipt. Based on the August emails, the company expected about $5 billion worth of hardware in August alone, followed by about $3 billion more every month. It’s unclear how long these purchases will continue.

The problem is that some AWS sites have room for new racks but not enough power to turn them on. As a result, finished hardware has to be stored in intermediate warehouses. One of the emails said at least one AWS team didn’t even have a clear plan for how and when to move these racks into data centers.

After the report came out, some gamers on social media accused Nvidia of prioritizing Big Tech while regular players struggle to find graphics cards. However, GB300 servers are built on dedicated Blackwell Ultra server chips, not the same chips used in RTX 50 series graphics cards, so this has little effect on the shortage.

The graphics card shortage is a particularly hot topic given recent rumors that Nvidia had supposedly stopped producing the RTX 5090 and redirected its chips to professional graphics cards. The company has denied those rumors, though. Nvidia’s senior vice president of personal computing, Jeff Fisher, acknowledged that supply is indeed limited but assured that Nvidia will keep shipping the RTX 5090. He also promised that the company is doing everything it can to get its products to market.
