Nestled in the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, El Capitan has officially claimed its title as the world’s fastest supercomputer. The supercomputer is housed in liquid-cooled Cray EX racks, requiring up to 9 million gallons of water per day to keep it running smoothly. El Capitan’s primary mission is to ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. Since real-world nuclear testing was halted in the 1990s, the U.S. has relied on supercomputers to simulate nuclear detonations and analyze the aging stockpile. Starting in March, El Capitan will take over this classified role, delivering simulations with unprecedented accuracy and detail.
Beyond nuclear research, El Capitan is poised to tackle a variety of global challenges.
