Nintendos The Legend of Zelda Live-Action-film får ett premiärdatum
It’s easy to forget, but Nintendo and Sony’s live-action Legend of Zelda movie is still happening, and now we know when it’s set to hit theaters: March 26, 2027. That’s just under two years away and almost exactly four years after it was first announced back in 2023. The news came via the Nintendo news app, which the company is encouraging everyone to download.
While many fans are excited about the Zelda movie, there’s also a lot of skepticism. For one, it’s a live-action film—something very different from the hugely successful CGI Super Mario Bros. Movie. That film captured the feel of the game in a way that was almost perfect, but achieving a similar vibe with Zelda could be much harder. The director for the project is Wes Ball, known for his work on the Maze Runner trilogy and, more recently, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. While his past films have garnered some praise, there’s little else in his track record over the last decade that would give fans a ton of confidence for such a high-profile movie.
Adding to the mixed feelings around the project is Avi Arad, the producer known for his involvement in several superhero movies, including Sony’s early Spider-Man flicks and some of the X-Men films. However, more recently, Arad’s worked on some major duds, such as the Venom movies and the disastrous Morbius film. His involvement doesn’t exactly scream success, and given that the Zelda movie is based on a beloved franchise with a dedicated fanbase, expectations are sky-high.

Despite all the question marks around the director and producer, the concept of a Zelda movie is still a big deal. The world of Zelda has been captivating fans for decades, and the idea of seeing that world brought to life on the big screen is exciting. However, there’s a lot of risk involved with making it live-action, especially considering how closely fans hold the franchise to their hearts. Personally, it feels like the project might’ve been better suited for CGI or even an anime adaptation, where the fantastical elements of Zelda could be more easily realized.
That said, the movie is still on track for its release in 2027, assuming no delays. However, we likely won’t see much in terms of promotion until 2026. At least now we finally have a date to mark on our calendars, even if it’s still a couple of years out. Whether the movie will meet fan expectations or fall flat is still up in the air, but the excitement (and trepidation) surrounding it is certainly growing.
