What’s the Plot of Mortal Kombat 2?

Mortal Kombat 2 Movie: Release Date and Everything We Know So Far 1

The first movie set the stage with Shang Tsung’s failed plot to destroy Earthrealm. With that drama behind us, the real Mortal Kombat tournament is finally about to take place. This time, Earthrealm is facing the ultimate do-or-die competition. After losing nine times in a row, Earthrealm must win the tournament, or Outworld will invade, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Franchise co-creator Ed Boon hinted at some unique elements for the sequel, saying the movie will not only feature intense battles but also show the score of the tournament visually.

“There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score,” Boon explained.

As fans of the franchise know, winning this battle means life or death for Earthrealm!

The sequel will feature some familiar faces, including Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Cole Young, Jax, and, of course, Johnny Cage, the A-list movie star turned fighter. New characters like Kitana, Baraka, Shao Kahn, and Quan Chi will also make their debut. There will even be a return for Sub-Zero, with Joe Taslim reprising his role, and Scorpion will return as well.

The movie is bringing in some major talent for the sequel. The new Johnny Cage will be played by Karl Urban, known for his roles in The Boys and Dredd. He’ll be joined by Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, and CJ Bloomfield as the toothy Baraka.

Karl Urban’s take on Johnny Cage will have a slightly different vibe than what fans are used to, with the actor adding his own flair to the character. Boon mentioned that Cage’s depiction will be fresh, offering something new while staying true to the essence of the character.

  • Mehcad Brooks as Jax
  • Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade
  • Josh Lawson as Kano
  • Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion
  • Ludi Lin as Liu Kang
  • Tadanobu Asano as Raiden
  • Chin Han as Shang Tsung

There will also be some surprises, with Joe Taslim in a mystery role and the return of characters who died in the first film, thanks to the mystical ways of the Netherrealm. If the franchise's history is any guide, expect a lot of resurrected warriors.
