The accessory, aptly named the 6 Pound Phone Case, is built around a simple but clever concept: when using your phone requires real physical effort, you’re far less likely to waste hours on social media. The story was first reported by Designboom.

Matter Neuroscience Introduces a 6-Pound Phone Case Designed to Curb Screen Addiction 1

Crafted from stainless steel, the case makes ordinary phone activities — such as texting, watching videos, or browsing apps — intentionally cumbersome. It’s composed of two interlocking panels fastened with screws that can only be removed using a hex key, meaning detaching it isn’t a quick task. This added inconvenience is meant to make users pause and reconsider before picking up their phones.

Despite its weight, the 6 Pound Phone Case retains full device functionality, featuring precise cutouts for the camera, charging port, power button, and volume controls. According to the developers, the accessory doesn’t limit what the phone can do — it simply introduces a “physical barrier” that encourages users to disconnect, slow down, and take a break from their screens.
