What Are Fortnite Sidekicks?

Introduced in November, Sidekicks are a new cosmetic category that lets players bring a small companion into matches. Unlike classic Back Bling pets, Sidekicks:

  • Follow players around the island
  • Offer no gameplay advantages, remaining purely cosmetic
  • Allow Epic Games to feature characters that don’t fit Fortnite’s standard character model

So far, the system has already supported unlikely crossovers, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Itchy from The Simpsons, and CourageJD’s dog, Louis.

“Cyndaquil, I Choose You!” 🔥

Using this system, one modder imagined how a Pokémon partnership could work:

  • X user boredcrow24 shared a 22-second clip of Cyndaquil, the Gen 2 Fire-type starter, acting as a Sidekick
  • The Pokémon follows the player closely and even plays audio similar to its classic in-game cry
  • The creator confirmed the walking animation was taken from PokéPark, a Wii-era Pokémon spin-off

Fan Reactions and Wishlist 💬

The clip instantly fueled excitement across social media:

  • Many fans said they would instantly buy Pokémon Sidekicks if they became official
  • Popular suggestions included Totodile, Eevee, and Quaquaval
  • Others joked about Epic’s potential revenue if each Pokémon were sold as a separate cosmetic 💰

Is an Official Collab Possible?

At the moment, there’s no indication that Epic Games and Nintendo are planning an official crossover. Nintendo is famously cautious with collaborations, especially on non-Nintendo platforms.

Still, the mod proves one thing clearly: Fortnite’s Sidekick system is a perfect fit for Pokémon-style companions. For now, fans can only imagine what could happen if Epic and Nintendo ever decided to team up.
