Kommande Far Cry-serier kommer inte att adaptera videospelshändelser
Besides multiple Far Cry games being confirmed to be in development at Ubisoft, the series will also get an expansion in the form of a TV series. Last year, it was confirmed that the show is in the works for FX and will be produced by Noah Hawley, who recently worked on Alien: Earth.
When this report came out, it was said that the series “will follow an anthology format like the games and feature a different cast and setting each season”. Far Cry fans were excited and hopeful that the upcoming show might adapt some great stories from the game series—including the events of Far Cry 3, which is rightly considered the best entry, largely thanks to its villain—Vaas Montenegro, who was played by Michael Mando. Nevertheless, it looks like Far Cry TV show will not adapt any of the video games, as Noah Hawley recently spoke with Deadline. You can check out the highlights from his interview below:
“We can have a larger conversation about the strengths and weaknesses of adapting video games, specifically because games are built in a way that doesn’t make for the best drama.
When you play a video game, you only really move forward through the gameplay section, and then you have these cut scenes that you can skip, so when you go to adapt those games, you have to be aware that makes the human drama kind of irrelevant to the storyline. That is death for a show.”
It’s not the first time when video game adaptations—movies and TV shows—are not becoming a direct adaptation; instead, we watch standalone stories, which are seemingly taking place in the game series universe, but we get to discover new stories with new characters. We can remember Warcraft movie, Resident Evil starring Mila Yovovich, or Need for Speed film, as well as Halo or Fallout TV shows. It looks like the upcoming Far Cry project will be exactly this kind.
As for Far Cry video games, Ubisoft confirmed that new games are in development, however, according to insider Tom Henderson, the franchise is “going through hell” at the moment. Previous rumors and reports suggested, the next standalone adventure of Far Cry could take place in Alaska or New England, and the multiplayer title will be an extraction shooter.
