An official Team Fortress 2 tournament is set to take place in Moscow this August, according to information published directly on the game’s official Steam page. The event is scheduled for August 15–16 and will use the traditional 6v6 format popular within the competitive TF2 scene.

What immediately drew attention across the community, however, was not the tournament itself — but the apparent involvement of Valve.

The championship announcement was posted directly through Steam and the official Team Fortress 2 page, strongly suggesting some level of official support or approval from Valve.

Valve Faces Questions After Team Fortress 2 Tournament Announced in Moscow 1

Community Raises Eyebrows Over Valve’s Position

The situation has already sparked discussion online, especially given the ongoing international isolation of Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

Many players were surprised to see Valve seemingly allowing official promotion of a tournament hosted in Moscow at a time when numerous gaming companies, esports organizers, and publishers continue distancing themselves from Russia.

For some members of the community, the situation creates the impression that Valve maintains a “business as usual” relationship with terrorist Russia despite the broader geopolitical context.

Valve Continues Avoiding Public Political Statements

Valve has historically avoided making direct political statements regarding international conflicts, unlike many other major gaming companies.

However, recent controversies surrounding:

have increasingly placed the company under criticism from parts of the gaming community.

The newly announced Moscow TF2 tournament has now added another layer to that ongoing debate.

Tournament Still Scheduled for August

At the moment, the tournament remains scheduled for August 15–16 with no indication of cancellation or removal from Steam.
