GTA 6 innehåller ursprungligen fyra huvudpersoner, säger Rockstar Games
As is well known, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos will be the main characters in GTA 6, and in the recently released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on Netflix, Rockstar demonstrated the mechanics for switching between characters. But as it turns out, there could have been twice as many fully playable characters in GTA 6.
Shortly after the premiere of Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, in an interview with IGN, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson revealed that Rockstar had initially considered a concept featuring four playable characters in GTA 6. Apparently, they liked the idea of multiple protagonists that players could switch between at any time, as was the case with GTA 5. But for the sixth installment, as Nelson explained, the decision was made to focus on Jason and Lucia in order to devote as much time as possible to each character. You can check out more details below:
“As the narrative unfolds, we're quite conscious to try and make sure that players have enough time with each character. After doing GTA 5, we talked about different ideas of – do we do more characters? How do we follow up three characters? Is it four characters now? But we worried about diluting the amount of player time with each and therefore player connection with those characters. So we decided to step in this direction of two characters in a relationship.
But then the question became: how do you make players feel like, ‘I love them both? ’ Chemistry is a notoriously hard thing to do in any sort of entertainment. Either the characters and the actors that embody them have it – or they don't. Everyone involved worked at that pretty hard. I think we’ve got it. I think we’ve got enough reaction within our team internally to where they feel great as individuals and together.”
It seems Rockstar has struck a good balance with two playable characters in GTA 6. After the fifth installment, having three or even four characters could have made them feel like afterthoughts and prevented them from being fully developed, as Nelson mentioned; at the same time, having just one protagonist in such a massive game might simply not have been enough.
Rockstar Games also shared new official details about GTA 6, covering the story, characters, open world, and more. The GTA 6 map is reportedly twice the size of GTA V's and three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's. Story missions will often involve choices that shape what comes next, and the relationship between Jason and Lucia is entirely player-driven: spend more time together, and their bond strengthens, but neglect that connection, and it can hurt their morale and ability to work together on missions.
It's also been reported that at launch, GTA 6 will run at 30 FPS on all consoles, including the PlayStation 5 Pro, and won't include a first-person mode, though both are likely candidates for future updates. If you haven't watched Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look yet, it's now available on Rockstar Games’ YouTube channel.
