Ny Star Wars-film kommer att göras av den tidigare Spider-Man-regissören

The Star Wars franchise keeps expanding on the big screen, just not at a rapid pace. A recent announcement confirmed a director for the next film, one expected to kick off an entirely new trilogy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Watts is set to direct the new Star Wars movie. The 45-year-old is best known for helming the Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy in the MCU, though he's also got Star Wars experience already, having worked on Skeleton Crew. Simon Kinberg, whose credits include Dark Phoenix and X-Men: Apocalypse, will write the screenplay for both this film and the trilogy as a whole. The new movie may connect to Episode IX, The Rise of Skywalker, with Daisy Ridley likely returning as Rey.

Speaking of Rey, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is separately working on a standalone film centered on the character, though the project is reportedly running into production issues, and no release date has been set. Several other Star Wars films are also in various stages of development, including projects from Dave Filoni, James Mangold, and Taika Waititi, along with one centered on Lando. On the confirmed side, Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling and Aaron Pierre, is set for next May, notable for exploring a period in the timeline the franchise hasn't covered before. This year also saw the release of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, which pulled in over $340 million worldwide, with 61% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.8/10 on IMDb.

On the gaming side, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, a new arcade racer from Fuse Games, launches October 6. Several other games remain in development, some facing rocky production, others still early on: Star Wars Eclipse at Quantic Dream, the Knights of the Old Republic Remake at Saber Interactive, and Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic from Arcanaut Studios. This summer also brought Star Wars: Zero Company from Bit Reactor, which turned out to be one of the year's highest-rated games.
