Genialt med hårtork Beats Polymarket 180x
Polymarket, the world’s largest blockchain-based prediction market platform, is once again at the center of a scandal, and this time there were no hacker attacks, flash loans, or smart-contract exploits. It was far simpler and more creative: an unknown trader (or group) simply showed up at the official Météo-France weather sensor at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport with a portable hairdryer and literally “warmed up” the temperature. The result? Anomalous spikes of 4–5°C, massive payouts on long-shot bets, and a full criminal investigation in France.
How It Actually Worked: From Idea to Payout
Every day Polymarket runs markets on the maximum daily temperature in Paris. The data comes exclusively from a single automated Météo-France sensor located right on the edge of the runway at Charles de Gaulle Airport. The sensor is practically unguarded, anyone could walk right up to it.
The scheme was brilliantly straightforward:
- The trader bought cheap “Yes” shares on unlikely high temperatures (for example, above 21–22°C when the real forecast was around 18°C). Share prices were pennies.
- In the evening he approached the sensor with a portable hairdryer (or lighter - versions differ) and heated the air around the probe for a few minutes.
- The sensor temperature jumped 4–5°C in 10–12 minutes and was recorded as the official daily high.
- The market closed automatically in the bettor’s favor and USDC was paid out instantly.
Anomalies were recorded twice: April 6 (+4°C, over 22°C) and April 15 (+5°C). One trader (reportedly under the nickname Hoaqin) put in just $119 and cashed out over $21,000, more than 180x. In total, across the two incidents, two accounts walked away with between $34,000 and $37,000. The affected betting volume reached $1.4 million.
Reaction from Authorities, Météo-France, and Polymarket
Météo-France quickly spotted the anomalies, inspected the sensor, found “physical signs of tampering,” and filed an official complaint with airport police (Roissy Air Transport Gendarmerie Brigade) for damaging an automated data-processing system. A criminal investigation is already underway.

Polymarket reacted fast: it removed the Charles de Gaulle sensor and switched to data from the neighboring Le Bourget Airport (better protected). All already-settled contracts remained valid — no refunds. The platform has not issued an official comment yet, but the oracle-change rule has already been updated.
What the Crypto Community Is Saying
The story exploded with memes in the Polymarket Discord and on X. Anonymous traders are sharing AI-generated images of “a man with a hairdryer next to the runway” and joking:
“Who would have thought the biggest oracle vulnerability was the lack of security around a hairdryer?” Some are already suggesting “drone with hairdryer” for London or “air conditioner in Tokyo.”
On Reddit and Twitter people are writing:
“This isn’t a hack. This is a real-world physical world-hack. Polymarket just proved the real world can be more vulnerable than code.”
A few climate activists are already outraged:
“They’re heating up a sensor while the rest of us freeze from climate change.”
Why This Is the Crypto Story of 2026
Polymarket is pure decentralization, everything runs on Polygon via smart contracts and oracles. But this time the “oracle” turned out to be an ordinary thermometer next to an airplane. No code, no bots, just a battery and hot air. The story perfectly illustrates how prediction markets can be vulnerable to the physical world, not just on-chain manipulation.
While regulators worldwide struggle with insider trading and political betting, someone simply showed up with a hairdryer and “made” the weather. French police are now hunting for the “hairdryer genius.” And crypto Twitter is already setting the timeline: who’s next, a hairdryer in London or an air conditioner in Dubai?
