Two million players stepped into the darkness on launch day, and Bandai Namco made sure to shout it from the rooftops. The new Elden Ring: Nightreign expansion has already smashed through 2 million copies sold on day one, according to an official post from the game’s X (Twitter) account. The image simply read:

"Thank you: 2 million Nightfarers on the first day."

In typical FromSoftware flair, the message was accompanied by a sombre declaration:

“Darkness fell over Limveld, and two million Nightfarers rose up against it. Thank you for your support.”

This was bound to be big, but 2 million in 24 hours? That’s bonkers even for a FromSoft release. It’s now the second-highest concurrent peak for any FromSoftware game on Steam, just behind the original Elden Ring. The Steam launch alone saw over 313,000 players online an hour after release, and that number will probably spike again over the weekend as people dive in.

But it hasn’t all been roses and rune farming. The reception on Steam is... mixed. And not in the vague "internet overreacting" way—more like, actual complaints from players that feel valid. Some fans are frustrated by the lack of a two-player mode, others say it feels shallower than the base game, and a few have run into performance issues even on high-end PCs. That last one stings a bit, considering how many people are rocking 40-series GPUs these days.

Still, Bandai Namco seems to be paying attention. And for solo players, there’s a patch coming next week that could make all the difference. Despite the game's good sales, it still lacks the impressive features that the original had. However, the game is decent if you forget about Elden Ring.

Patch 1.02 is on the way, and it’s looking out for the lone wolves.

Here’s what’s confirmed so far:

  • The patch will include several bug fixes
  • It will bring improvements for solo expeditions
  • Most importantly, the ‘Automatic Revival Upon Defeat’ effect will be added to solo mode
  • Solo players will also earn more runes

Now we’re talking. Nightreign’s design clearly favors three-player co-op, but not everyone wants to go in with a full party. A lot of players still prefer the old-school solo suffering style, and this patch seems to acknowledge that.

From a formal perspective, Nightreign’s initial performance further cements FromSoftware’s ability to drive enormous player engagement even with post-launch content. The 2-million-copy milestone within 24 hours highlights the franchise's enduring popularity and the player base’s hunger for more Elden Ring content, especially after a long dry spell since the original game's launch in 2022.

The upcoming patch is also a smart move in terms of player retention. A solo mode that’s punishing to the point of alienation can affect long-term replayability. By offering revival mechanics and rune scaling for solo players, the developers are providing a more balanced experience without diminishing the challenge that FromSoft fans expect.

If you're a solo player waiting on that patch, here's the move: hang back a few days, let 1.02 drop, and then go full Nightfarer. The one-revive-per-night-boss mechanic will help ease that brutal solo curve, and more runes means faster scaling and better odds in the long run.

For everyone else already co-oping through Limveld: congrats, you probably won’t need the revive.

Nightreign might not be perfect out of the gate, but the fact that Bandai Namco is already tuning it based on player feedback? That’s promising. Let’s just hope performance fixes are next on the list.
