Slay The Spire sätter nytt rekord för samtidiga spelare på Steam
Slay the Spire has reached a new all-time concurrent player peak on Steam, nearly seven years after its original release. According to SteamDB data, the deckbuilding roguelike surpassed 57,000 simultaneous players during the current holiday period, breaking its previous record by a wide margin.
The earlier peak dated back to the game’s early access launch in 2018, when it drew just over 33,000 concurrent players. The latest surge pushed well past that figure, peaking hours before publication and later stabilizing at around 35,000 players. Even after the drop, the count remained above the former record, marking a sustained increase rather than a brief spike.
Several factors appear to have driven the renewed interest. Chief among them is pricing. During Steam’s 2025 Winter Sale, Slay the Spire dropped to $2.49, the lowest recorded price on the platform. SteamDB’s tracked history only covers the past two years, but the discount stands out even within that window. At that price point, the game became one of the most accessible high-profile titles in the sale, prompting purchases from new players and returns from lapsed ones.
The timing also aligns with growing attention around Slay the Spire 2. Mega Crit’s sequel has been positioned as one of the most anticipated upcoming PC releases, earning “Most Wanted” recognition at this year’s PC Gaming Show. With a follow-up on the horizon, players have clear incentive to revisit the original or experience it for the first time. The original game’s systems remain relevant to understanding the sequel’s direction, reinforcing its appeal as an entry point.
Another source of crossover interest may be the Slay the Spire board game adaptation. The tabletop version holds an 8.7 out of 10 user rating on BoardGameGeek, signaling a positive reception among board game audiences. That visibility introduces the franchise to players who may not have engaged with the digital version before, some of whom appear to have migrated to the PC release during the sale window.
The renewed player numbers also reflect the game’s long-term durability. Slay the Spire launched to strong critical acclaim and has maintained an active player base without relying on live-service updates or seasonal content. Its structure encourages repeat runs, experimentation with card synergies, and gradual mastery, which has allowed it to remain relevant long after its initial release cycle.
PC Gamer’s Evan Lahti described the game in his review as a
“genre-bending achievement” that “puts absolutely broken combos within your grasp.”
That assessment continues to resonate with players years later. The mechanics remain intact, the balance holds up under repeated play, and the game’s modding community has extended its lifespan without fragmenting its core experience.
The current peak underscores a broader pattern seen with a small number of PC titles that benefit from deep discounts, strong word-of-mouth, and renewed franchise visibility. Slay the Spire’s case stands out due to the scale of the increase and the time elapsed since launch. Few single-player games see their highest engagement figures arrive this late in their lifecycle.
Slay the Spire is currently available on Steam for $2.49 as part of the ongoing Winter Sale.
