Star Wars Eclipse från Quantic Dream är fortfarande under utveckling, men situationen är fortfarande komplicerad

A few days ago, Quantic Dream, the developers of such titles as Detroit: Become Human and Heavy Rain, announced that Spellcasters Chronicles servers, the studio’s multiplayer shooter, shut down next month, on June 19. Fortunately, as studio representatives noted, this decision did not affect another of the company’s projects—Star Wars Eclipse, a new “interactive film” game announced back in 2021. Nevertheless, it appears that development of the game is still facing some challenges.

Last month it was reported that the development of Star Wars Eclipse is progressing slowly as the studio reportedly achieved “very little progress over months.” Moreover, it was mentioned that NetEase, the parent company of Quantic Dream, considered Spellcasters Chronicles as the source of profit, including for Star Wars Eclipse. Now, when the game is actually cancelled, as its servers will close next month, the fans are worried that the game, which was announced five years ago, might end up being canceled.

The new report from STJV gives more information about the future of Quantic Dream and Star Wars Eclipse, and it doesn’t sound good. It is mentioned that one quarter of the company’s employees, which is around 95 workers, may lose their jobs as a result of layoffs. The source also reveals that Star Wars Eclipse was set to release much earlier and be a “reasonably sized project.” As for Spellcasters Chronicles, the project was in development for over eight years and was worked on by people with “30 years of experience,” but, as we can see, it didn’t lead to anything good.

STJV: Quantic Dream's 'Star Wars Eclipse' still in Complicated Development as Cancelled 'Spellcasters' Spent 8 Years in Dev + Mismanagement disaster and 95 jobs at risk

Key Quotes

"One quarter of the company’s workers are under threat: this adds up to 95 lost jobs."

"This project, started 8 years ago and led by Guillaume de Fondaumière, David Cage and Grégorie Diaconu, was supposed to be a “reasonably-sized” project and was planned for a much earlier release. Over all these years, nobody questioned the business model or how the game was to become profitable. Catastrophic project management resulted in iteration after iteration, exhausting the team and leading production straight to disaster."

"It’s sad to say, nobody is surprised by this outcome. Worker representatives have sounded the alarm about the project’s colossal risk level numerous times. In front of employees, management arrogantly explained that success was a given for Spellcasters Chronicles, thanks to “30 years of experience” of the decision-makers. In front of the workers’ council, management refused to consider other scenarios and to plan accordingly. Failure was never an option, never thought about, never planned for: incompetence led us here today. Workers pay for management’s misguided ways."

"Management is trying to lay off the entirety of the Spellcasters Chronicles team, and pretends that this team’s skills have no link at all with those of the Star Wars Eclipse team – even after training."

"The same causes lead to the same problems: Star Wars Eclipse entered production at the same time as Spellcasters, with the same directors, and its development is proving just as complicated."

There's hope that the failure of yet another online project won’t lead to the cancellation of such a highly anticipated and promising single-player title, especially when it comes to a franchise like Star Wars. Apparently, for some reason, Quantic Dream failed to learn from others’ mistakes, looking at games like Concord, LawBreakers, or, from more recent examples, Highguard. By the way, Star Wars Eclipse isn't the only game in the franchise currently in development:

  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake—developed by Mad Head Games for PC and PlayStation 5—still has no release date. The new look at the game is rumored to be revealed somewhere this year.
  • Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic—developed by Casey Hudson (director of the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) and Arcanaut Studios. Announced at last year’s The Game Awards and doesn’t have a release date yet.
  • Star Wars: Galactic Racer—a new racing title from Fuse Games, former developers behind Burnout and Need for Speed game series. Set to release on October 6, 2026, for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
