Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind Alan Wake and Control, has repeatedly claimed that its upcoming project, Control Resonant, will be the studio's most ambitious and biggest game to date. That had been backed up both by comments from the developers themselves and by details revealed about the gameplay so far, including a genre shift and the inclusion of large-scale, semi-open locations. It has now come out that the game's duration reflects that scale as well.

TechRadar recently spoke with Sergey Mohov, lead gameplay designer on Control Resonant, who confirmed that you don't need to play the original Control game before the sequel—much like in Death Stranding, the developers have built a short recap of the first game's events right into the main menu. He also claimed he drew inspiration from Devil May Cry 2 and 3, as well as PlatinumGames titles like Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, while working on the sequel, and made an interesting point about how long Control Resonant will take. Finishing the main story takes around 30 hours, roughly the same as a full playthrough of the original project, while a complete walkthrough runs up to 50 hours, as you can check out in his statement below:

“The core experience in Control Resonant should be around 30 hours, and the fully walkthrough is expected to be within the 50 hours" ballpark. I also don't think you have to play the first Control game to play Resonant. But if you do, it will enrich your experience, especially narratively. We put in a Control recap, right at the top of the main menu, though, so you don't need to play it.”

Control Resonant is a direct sequel to the 2019 game, but Remedy has changed quite a lot. Along with introducing a new protagonist, Dylan Faden—brother of the first game's lead, Jesse— the sequel is shifting into the action-RPG genre, which explains the longer runtime. Creative director Mikael Kasurinen shared more details recently in an interview, as he called Control Resonant the studio's best game yet and teased plenty of surprises, including nods to Remedy's other projects, some of which are planned for the future.

Remedy has also previously discussed the possibility of a third Control game, although it’s fully dependent on the performance of Control Resonant. The studio is also working on Max Payne 1&2 remakes, which are currently in full production, along with a new IP still in the concept phase.
