Microsoft återställer Age of Empires 3 DLC efter 16 månader
The abandoned Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition DLC is back from the dead, now titled The Baltic Powers, and it arrives on September 10, 2026, with an Open Beta already live on Steam for everyone to try.
The road here was long and grim. Microsoft first announced the DLC back in 2023, with a vague "late 2024" window. Late 2024 instead brought a delay, with Microsoft blaming a crowded slate and saying it would push the release "to a future date," and then the game went quiet. After months of silence, the project's cancellation was confirmed in January this year. At the time, Microsoft admitted that announcing the DLC before the team had even started work had been "premature."
Roughly 16 months later, it has been revived with a name, a date, and real details. On their blog post, the developers thanked the Age 3 community, saying its passion had not gone unnoticed and that the expansion answers what these fans value most: new strategic problems, new matchups, and new reasons to return. For a community that had watched the DLC die once already, a full reveal with an Open Beta attached is a real turnaround.
The Baltic Powers expansion adds two new civilizations, each with its own strategic identity. The Danes lead Denmark-Norway and lean on economic intelligence, naval control, and layered defense, using a Customs House to skim off other players' shipments and sheltering villagers in Round Churches under pressure. The Poles command the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, pairing a booming Folwark economy and lower building costs with battlefield-shaking cavalry, from the Hetman to the fearsome Winged Hussars, and they can even steer their history, sparking early Cossack uprisings or resurrecting the Teutonic Knights. Beyond the two civs, the expansion packs in a lot more:
- More than 20 new maps and over 50 hero customizations.
- Two score-chasing Challenge Scenarios: Commonwealth Charge and Havana Heat.
- Two rule-changing modes: Regicide, a race to kill the enemy Regent, and Independence, which strips away Home City support.
- An Arctic push from the Baltic Sea onward, including a map pack stretching from Svalbard to Nunavut with Inuit dog sleds and whaling ships.
- Historical maps like The Livonian War and The Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
- Wider upgrades, from balance changes and new revolutions to Editor, Spectator, and Replay improvements.
The Open Beta is live on Steam now, giving the whole community an early look at the Danes and the Poles, and the game's free trial wraps up on August 13.
I do not play much Age of Empires, but reviving a DLC the community had already mourned is the rare Xbox headline this year that made me smile. I cannot fully ignore the timing, though, because a feel-good un-cancellation lands awfully conveniently while Microsoft is cutting thousands of jobs and hunting for good press. Still, if this is what refocusing on the core looks like for a beloved strategy game, I will take it.
Microsoft's reset under CEO Asha Sharma will cut around 3,200 Xbox jobs by next July, and since that news broke, the company has been seeding good headlines, from launching Xbox backward compatibility on PC to a big Bethesda update that dangled vague talk of The Elder Scrolls 6. An un-cancelled fan-favorite expansion slots neatly into that campaign; it is a small, cheap way to remind fans that Microsoft still ships things people asked for.
The broader strategy points the other way, though. Reports say Sharma personally axed the PlayStation 5 version of Gears of War: E-Day, and she has openly refused to rule out a return to Xbox exclusive games as she tries to pull players back to the hardware. Halo: Campaign Evolved is still on the calendar for PlayStation, so the exclusivity line is being drawn selectively rather than across the board. Age of Empires, meanwhile, is a franchise Microsoft clearly still values: a brand-new entry is reportedly in development at World's Edge Studios, built in Unreal Engine 5 for a possible 2027 or 2028 launch.
