Skådespelaren trodde inte att Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 skulle bli en framgångsrik titel

Last year’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has become a massive success for Sandfall Interactive, not only because it sold 3.3 million copies over a month, but also because it won various GOTY awards and became the most decorated game in terms of GOTY awards ever.

The game clearly exceeded the developers' expectations, and they probably couldn't believe that their project would achieve such fame. However, one of the game's voice actors, Ben Starr, who voiced Verso in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, admitted that he didn’t believe the game would become that successful and even told his friends not to set their expectations too high. He has spoken about this and many other things on Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences YouTube channel with Alexa Ray Corriea. You can check out highlights from his interview below:

“2025 was an interesting year for me because I remember speaking to you about Expedition 33 coming out and I really played it down to a lot of people. I don't like hyping up my work really before it's happened. I really like it to speak for itself and then we kind of talk about it.

I think there was so much excitement about the potential, that I kept being like, just keep your expectations in check. You know, it's a team. They've made it. It's a brilliant expression of what they want to make, but this isn't going to be like a smash hit video game. And how wrong I was.

It wasn't a lack of faith in the material. I believed in the material a long time before that ever came out. No one could have predicted that.

I thought it was going to be the year of me dressing up as a clown at the BAFTAs. I thought was going to be my biggest contribution to the gaming landscape – me being an idiot with Balatro.”

Speaking of BAFTA, as mentioned by Ben Starr, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has won the most awards at the BAFTA Gaming Awards 2026—Best Game, Best Debut, and Performer in a Leading Role (Jennifer English as Maelle). The game also matched the record, previously held only by Baldur's Gate III —which won Game of the Year awards at five major gaming ceremonies: Golden Joystick, DICE Awards, GDC Awards, The Game Awards, and BAFTA Games Awards.
