In the run-up to Gamescom 2026, one of the year’s biggest gaming shows, which kicks off this week, more and more game studios are making announcements about their future projects. CD Projekt RED is one of them and has made a significant announcement regarding one of its upcoming games—The Witcher 4.

The developers have posted a new video message on their social media, primarily concerning The Witcher franchise. For those who were expecting a new trailer or gameplay footage from the fourth installment at Gamescom—unfortunately, this will not be happening, as confirmed by CD PROJEKT RED Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski. Instead, all attention will be focused on the new DLC for the third installment, Songs of the Past. However, Nowakowski made another important announcement—he confirmed that the studio intends to release The Witcher 4 in 2028. Michał Nowakowski’s full statement is available below:

As we near gamescom in just a few days, CD PROJEKT RED Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski would like to personally invite YOU to join us there, and hear about the future of The Witcher franchise!

There had previously been rumors that the fourth installment might be released in late 2027, but it seems the studio needs more time to bring all its plans to fruition and to ensure the game’s launch does not turn into a disaster like the one that befell Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020. That said, fans aren’t too upset about this and believe the studio shouldn’t rush the release. Especially as the aforementioned DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt—Songs of the Past—is set to release next year.

When it comes to Songs of the Past, the expansion is expected to lay the groundwork for the fourth title, and we’ll find out more about it tomorrow during Opening Night Live, where the game will be fully showcased. It was previously revealed that the demonstration will not include any spoilers for the third installment but will also present new content. CD Projekt RED has also confirmed that Gwent will be in Songs of the Past and has hinted that there will be some new features in this regard.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past will release next year for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The Witcher 4 is confirmed to release in 2028 (PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5). Gamescom 2026 will take place from August 26 to August 30, 2026, in Cologne, Germany, with the Opening Night Live kickoff showcase streams on Tuesday evening, August 25.
